Malaysia PDG Data Center Substation Project

Malaysia PDG Data Center Substation Project

Project Background & Challenges

  • Mission-Critical Objective: Construct a 220/35kV primary substation for PDG Data Center (48MW total capacity) in Kuala Lumpur, compliant with ANSI/TIA-942-B Tier IV – the highest reliability standard requiring ≤0.4 hours (24 minutes) of annual unplanned downtime (equivalent to ≥99.999% operational availability).

  • Extreme Environmental Conditions:

    • Tropical Climate: Persistent high heat/humidity (avg. 28–35°C, >90% RH), demanding exceptional equipment cooling, insulation integrity, and condensation resistance.

    • Grid Harmonic Distortion: Elevated harmonic pollution (THDu >8%) risking equipment overheating, protection misoperation, and measurement inaccuracies.

    • Coastal Corrosion: Site proximity <5 km from coastline exposed critical assets to salt fog-induced corrosion.

  • Core Requirement: Medium-voltage (MV) switchgear must deliver flawless performance in these harsh conditions – demanding supreme electrical stability, mechanical endurance, environmental resilience, and minimal maintenance to meet Tier IV’s zero-tolerance for failure.

Solution: SH-40.5V/T630A-25KA SF6 Ring Main Unit with Integrated Circuit Breaker (RMU-CB)

  • Deployed Technology: Our SH-40.5V/T630A-25KA SF6 Gas-Insulated Ring Main Unit with Circuit Breaker functionality served as the core MV switchgear for the 35kV distribution system.

  • Key Features Addressing Challenges:

    • SF6 Gas Insulation:

      • Environmental Immunity: Hermetically sealed design eliminates humidity, salt fog, and dust ingress, ensuring internal components operate in a pristine, dry SF6 environment.

      • Space Efficiency & Safety: Compact footprint conserves critical space; fully enclosed structure enhances personnel safety.

      • Dielectric Strength: Superior insulation properties guarantee long-term reliability at 35kV voltage levels.

    • Integrated Circuit Breaker (CB) Protection: Delivers full short-circuit interruption capability (25kA) – a foundational Tier IV requirement – unlike basic load-switching solutions:

      • Critical Fault Clearing: Reliably isolates worst-case short-circuit faults (25kA prospective current), protecting upstream grid infrastructure and downstream transformers.

      • Selective Coordination: Enables precise time-current grading with upstream (220kV) and downstream (e.g., transformer) protection to minimize outage impact.

    • Robust Electrical Ratings: 40.5kV voltage class (35kV system compatible), 630A continuous current, and 25kA breaking capacity meet high-density data center loads and grid fault levels.

    • Harmonic Resilience: Critical components (CTs, relays) designed for immunity to harmonic distortion (>8% THDu), ensuring measurement accuracy and protection reliability.

    • Maintenance Optimization: SF6 sealing and robust mechanical design extend service intervals, reducing downtime exposure from maintenance – essential for Tier IV operational continuity.
